Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty

Not in MY Name Project

Spring 2001

 My Fellow Kansans,

In 1994 Kansas reinstated the death penalty as punishment for certain homicides. Despite the publicity about the Kansas death penalty, homicides continue, as more Kansas families grieve the loss of their loved ones. The capital cases being filed throughout our state, in both rural and urban areas, clearly indicate that the death penalty h as not provided protection for the citizens of Kansas.

The imposition of the death penalty is requiring the state to spend vital local and state resources for pre-trial, trial, and post-trial death penalty phases. The dollars being spent have not been available for use in true crime prevention—prevention of not just homicide, but other types of crime as well.

The Department of Corrections is working to finalize the protocol for executions. Out of necessity, part of this protocol is to provide stress management for staff members participating in executions. It is obvious that making such provisions for killing carries a price that is more than dollars and cents.

Unless the law is changed, Kansas will rejoin the ranks of executioners. The death penalty should be removed from state law for many reasons, which include:

bullet

The death penalty does not protect the people of Kansas from violent crime. There is no credible evidence showing it is a deterrent to violence.

bullet

It sends a clear message that killing another person is a socially acceptable way of solving problems. The cycle of violence is perpetuated by the reliance on death as a component of public policy.

bullet

The death penalty contradicts the moral and religious beliefs of many Kansans.

bullet

Resources used in the implementation of the death penalty are not available for use in true crime prevention and response to basic human needs.

bullet

Public safety can be ensured by use of imprisonment for persons convicted of first degree murder.

By signing this letter, I wish to communicate to you, my fellow Kansans, that I do not believe the death penalty serves the best interest of Kansas. It continues the cycle of violence and does nothing to protect the people of Kansas. Please do not assume that peoples' silence on this issue means support of the death penalty. This letter serves as formal notice of my wish not to be associated with this public policy. The Kansas death penalty: NOT IN MY NAME!
